With all the redwood groves surrounding our community, there are many hiking trails within a short drive that will free your mind from your everyday thoughts and take you on a visual journey that will feed your soul and mind. If your agenda is full be sure to make this stop, Stout Grove is a not a hike to miss. It is an easy 1.5 mile hike, and there is also a new rest area at the parking site.
Seeing these redwoods will firmly remind you of your place on this planet. They are beyond magnificent and one can't help but wonder about the history these trees have witnessed.
Stout Grove is located off Howland Hill road coming from Crescent City or Smith River. Coming from Crescent City adds a beautiful 5-mile scenic drive to the trail. We recommend coming in the early morning or in the late afternoon in the summertime to view the trees through the early morning fog or the brilliant afternoon sun. From the parking area, a trail leads downhill into Stout grove, where a nice flat loop trail takes you to an awe-inspiring view. You will see two other trails branch off from the trail. During the summer months, you will see a seasonal bridge that crosses the creek to Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park.

When you are ready to head back to the Stout Grove loop, go left toward Little Bald Hills Trail. You will cross a wooden bridge over Cedar Creek with a view of some beautiful rhododendrons on the nearby slopes. Late May to mid-June is the ideal time to photograph these lovely rhododendrons.
It is so easy to pass by all the beauty that surrounds us. A camping trip is the perfect way to share with your family all the fabulous views and scenery that mother nature provides.
